What it is for
A mug is the gift that gets used every morning. It sits on a desk or a counter, so the design is seen by the person who received it more than by anyone else.
Handles and the rim are not printed; the wrap stops a little short of the handle on both sides.
Dye sublimation
Sublimation prints the design onto transfer paper with dye ink; heat then turns the dye into a gas that bonds into a polyester coating or polyester fibre.
Colour becomes part of the surface rather than a layer on top, so it is vivid and does not crack or peel. It cannot print white: white in a design shows as the colour of the item itself, which is why sublimated items are white or pale.
There is no texture at all — on fabric you cannot feel the print, and on a mug it is under a smooth coating.
Designs that suit it
The print wraps around the body. A design about twice as wide as it is tall fills it; a single image can be placed on one side, or repeated so it shows whichever hand holds the mug.
The print area is on the front: 2,457 × 1,181 pixels, about 8.2 × 3.9 in at 300 dpi — a wide, landscape area. The studio generates the design at that size, so it is printed from a full-resolution file rather than an enlarged preview.
Full-colour photographs, paintings and edge-to-edge patterns. Less suited: designs that rely on white ink, and important detail right at seams, handles or edges where the transfer wraps.

Yes. Sublimation reproduces photographs in full colour with no texture. White areas print as the item's own colour, so a photo with a white background blends into it. The print file is 2457 × 1181 pixels on the front, so a photo should be at least that size to print sharply.
