What it is for
Towels are practical gifts that become personal with a name or a picture: a beach towel for a trip, tea towels for a kitchen.
Printed towels have a printed face and a plain back; the printed side is softer on polyester blends.
Dye sublimation
Sublimation prints the design onto transfer paper with dye ink; heat then turns the dye into a gas that bonds into a polyester coating or polyester fibre.
Colour becomes part of the surface rather than a layer on top, so it is vivid and does not crack or peel. It cannot print white: white in a design shows as the colour of the item itself, which is why sublimated items are white or pale.
There is no texture at all — on fabric you cannot feel the print, and on a mug it is under a smooth coating.
