A mug is a small billboard

Why the most ordinary product in the catalog is the one we think hardest about.

Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji) by Katsushika Hokusai, printed on a mug

The 11-ounce mug is the first product in our catalog and the one we have printed the most times. It is also the most unforgiving. A hoodie is seen across a room. A mug is seen from eighteen inches, every morning, with both hands around it.

What it forces

  • Type has to be large and few. One line beats three.
  • The print wraps, so the design has a front, a back and a handle side. Most mug designs forget the handle side.
  • Ceramic is bright white. Colour that looks rich on a screen looks thin on a mug unless it is pushed.
  • It will be washed two hundred times. Sublimation, not a sticker.

Why we start there

If a design works on a mug it will work on almost anything. So the studio tends to show you the mug first when you don't choose a product, not because it is cheap, but because it is the hardest easy thing.
